Projects

Cavenia’s experience spans strategy, feasibility, standards development, vehicle procurement, infrastructure, testing, regulatory coordination, and fleet transition. The following examples illustrate the depth and range of this work.

Zero-Emission Regional Passenger Train and Infrastructure Project

Zero-Emission Regional Passenger Train and Infrastructure Project

The United States’ first federally compliant hydrogen-powered passenger train progressed from technology comparison and feasibility through delivery with Dr. Andreas Hoffrichter serving as a key technical member of the project team. He provided specialist expertise across the integrated hydrogen-and-battery powertrain and supporting infrastructure, including technical specifications, design and compliance reviews, supplier oversight, test witnessing, vehicle acceptance, Federal Railroad Administration concurrence, and hazard analysis. His work also supported procurement of the hydrogen fueling station and retrofit of the maintenance facility, helping turn an ambitious zero-emission concept into a complete rail system ready for passenger service.

Intercity Passenger Rail Low- and Zero-Emission Program

Zero-Emission Regional Passenger Train and Infrastructure Project

Since 2020, Dr. Andreas Hoffrichter has advised a major passenger rail organization on the development and implementation of a long-term low- and zero-emission motive power strategy. As a key technical lead, he evaluated propulsion and energy options, defined technology milestones, and translated emissions objectives into practical fleet and infrastructure actions. The roadmap included transitioning the existing locomotive fleet to 100% renewable diesel as an immediate emissions-reduction measure while hydrogen-powered trains and supporting infrastructure are developed and deployed. He continues to support the new fleet procurement through design reviews, subsystem and component assessments, test witnessing, and production oversight, with particular focus on hydrogen storage, fuel-cell systems, traction batteries, and their integration into safe, reliable passenger trains.

Dr. Andreas Hoffrichter has supported this comprehensive zero-emission strategy for a transit operator since its early development and continues to advise the client through Cavenia. The completed framework established the technical pathway for a full rail fleet transition by comparing electrification, hydrogen, and battery-electric technologies across two passenger services: a diesel locomotive-hauled commuter operation and a diesel multiple-unit service. It integrated vehicle and infrastructure requirements with operating needs, interoperability, financing, procurement, and evolving emissions requirements. With the strategy now complete, the client has moved into implementation. Cavenia will continue providing technical guidance during this stage helping translate the framework into coordinated fleet and infrastructure actions.

Hydrogen and Electrification Rail Standards Research

Zero-Emission Rail Fleet Strategy and Transition Program

Zero-Emission Rail Fleet Strategy and Transition Program

A major North American research initiative examined the codes and standards needed for safe hydrogen and battery-electric rail deployment, with Dr. Andreas Hoffrichter contributing as a co-author and zero-emission rail subject matter expert. The work reviewed requirements for vehicles and infrastructure, engaged industry stakeholders, identified gaps in component and subsystem design, crashworthiness, hydrogen refueling, battery charging, and interoperability, and established a roadmap for future standards activity. He subsequently contributed to newly released 2026 standards for hydrogen fuel-cell power systems and onboard lithium-ion traction batteries for rolling stock. Together, this work provides a more consistent technical foundation for safe and reliable zero-emission rail deployment in Canada and the United States.
