About Us

Cavenia draws on rail-sector experience dating to 2009 and a record of moving complex vehicle, infrastructure, and zero-emission programs from analysis into operation. The company’s capabilities span engineering consulting, academic research and development, and railway education. Its founder, Dr. Andreas Hoffrichter, is globally recognized for expertise in hydrogen- and battery-powered railway systems, supported by leadership of zero-emission rail programs and multidisciplinary teams, direction of a university railway research and education center, development and testing of novel propulsion systems, and peer-reviewed research on hydrogen, batteries, hybrid powertrains, train performance, energy use, and emissions.

This combination of technical depth and delivery experience underpins Cavenia’s support across the full project lifecycle—from feasibility studies, techno-economic and emissions analysis, and transition planning to vehicle and infrastructure procurement, design reviews, testing, regulatory compliance, and acceptance. Representative work includes the United Kingdom’s first practical hydrogen-powered locomotive, the first hydrogen passenger train to meet U.S. Federal Railroad Administration requirements, low- and zero-emission fleet strategies, and associated fueling and maintenance infrastructure. With passenger and freight rail experience across North America, Europe, Australia, Brazil, and Africa, Cavenia turns research, strategy, and engineering into safe, deployable solutions for real-world operation.
